About Oral-Conscious Sedation

The dental industry has advanced tremendously in just a few years. However, anxiety and fear of undergoing a dental procedure still prevent many patients from scheduling appointments for regular dental cleanings and exams. For this reason, skilled dentist Dr. Karuna Peravali provides oral-conscious sedation to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed during your appointment. Anti-anxiety medications can be prescribed to be taken prior to your dental appointment so you will be in a relaxed state of mind but capable of following directions. To learn more about oral-conscious sedation and your appointments at White Lotus Dental, schedule a consultation at our McKinney, TX dental office. We want to help you receive the dental care you deserve while also having a positive, relaxing experience.

Best Candidates

Overall, oral-conscious sedation may help adults and children alike who have fears and anxieties about having dental work performed. Prior to providing you with any medication for oral-conscious sedation, Dr. Peravali will complete a detailed consultation to decide if you are an ideal candidate. She will review your current medications and medical history to be sure you are safe to take sedation medication, and also to determine which medication will best suit your needs. Oral sedation might not be ideal if you are dealing with respiratory or heart issues, are pregnant, or have had an allergic reaction to benzodiazepines.

What to Expect

There are a number of medications that may be used for oral-conscious sedation. The medication chosen by Dr. Peravali will be based on you, your stress level, your overall health, what dental work is taking place, as well as the approximated amount of time your appointment will take. Dr. Peravali will prescribe your sedation medication during your consultation so that you can fill it prior to your procedure. You will take the medication prior to arriving at our facility so you will need to plan for a reliable adult drive you to our practice. If you have chosen light oral-conscious sedation, you will stay at ease but will still be alert and awake. With heavier sedation, you will also be conscious, but your recollection will not be clear. You could drift off to sleep, but it will be easy to wake you up.

Treatment Aftercare

The amount of time it will take to recover from sedation is dependent upon the type of medication given for the procedure. Regardless, you will need a ride home and for someone to stay with you for a few hours following the procedure. You will not be capable of driving a car until the following day after you have had the chance to sleep off the medication. Dr. Peravali will speak with you at your consultation about the potential side effects of the medication prescribed for you. In most circumstances, patients report dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and headaches after receiving oral-conscious sedation. The threat of vomiting and/or nausea can be minimized by consuming a light meal prior to your appointment and having a snack approximately an hour following your procedure. We invite you to contact our team if you experience lingering side effects or if you have questions after the dental procedure.

Insurance Coverage

If you have dental insurance, a member of our team will contact your provider to identify your coverage concerning oral-conscious sedation options. After gathering your information, we will be better able to calculate your remaining costs. For those without dental insurance, Dr. Peravali can discuss the payment options our office accepts that include medical financing to help make your dental procedures fit your budget.
