About Tooth Extractions

At White Lotus Dental in McKinney, TX, we make every effort to rescue and preserve your natural teeth for years to come. However, there are cases where a tooth or teeth may need to be extracted. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible above the gumline. This is generally used for a tooth that is damaged or decayed beyond repair. A surgical extraction removes a tooth that has not erupted above the gumline. Surgical extractions are most commonly done to remove the wisdom teeth and impacted teeth that do not have enough room to fit into your smile. Regardless of the reason for needing a tooth extraction at White Lotus Dental, our North Texas dental team will treat you with the best care possible. Our dental office offers different sedation techniques, like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, and that means you can remain comfortable during your procedure. Contact the McKinney, TX dental office of Dr. Karuna Peravali to schedule your appointment today.

Best Candidates

If your tooth has been broken or damaged from decay, Dr. Peravali will make every effort to repair it with a crown, bonding, or filling. However, a tooth may be too damaged and will need to be extracted to prevent the damage from spreading — and to save the health of the remaining teeth. You could also need an extraction to remove teeth that simply do not fit in your mouth. This includes your third molars, commonly known as wisdom teeth, that develop around the ages of 17 – 21. In older children, baby teeth that have not fallen out naturally may need to be pulled so they don't block the permanent teeth. If you are getting braces or considering Invisalign, you may need an extraction to make room for other teeth as they move into their proper position.

What to Expect

Extractions are performed in our McKinney, TX dental office with local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth being treated. Other kinds of sedation might be used, depending on the extent of the procedure and to help keep you relaxed if you have any dental anxieties. As soon as you are ready, Dr. Peravali will begin the procedure. To complete a simple extraction, she will loosen the tooth with a special device known as an elevator before removing the tooth. A surgical extraction involves making incisions in your gums to reach the tooth. If needed, the tooth might be broken into smaller pieces so it can be removed. Once the tooth is removed, Dr. Peravali will stitch the incision in the gums. She may prescribe antibiotics that should be taken before and after the process — in case you have a current infection, if your immune system is weak, if the procedure is prolonged, or if you have other specific medical conditions.

Recovery after Extraction

Based upon the anesthesia used throughout your extraction, you might be required to have an adult take you home. As your gums heal, you need to avoid spitting, smoking, and using straws. Your recovery will vary based on the extent of your dental extraction; however, many patients choose to eat soft, room-temperature food for at least a couple of days following the procedure. Dr. Peravali will speak with you regarding what is normal as you recover and the best ways to look after your gums. Your gums will probably be inflamed after the procedure; therefore, we may suggest over-the-counter pain medicine and cold compresses. Sometimes, we can give you a written prescription for pain medicine and/or antibiotics. Besides some proposed follow-up visits, you should schedule regular appointments at White Lotus Dental for dental examinations and cleanings so Dr. Peravali can track your dental health following an extraction.

Insurance Coverage

A tooth extraction is generally covered by dental insurance, but your sedation option may not be completely covered. Prior to your extraction, we'll call your insurance provider to ascertain your particular policy and estimate your out-of-pocket expenses. If you do not have dental insurance, our billing coordinators and front office staff can speak with you about the various payments we take and help put together a payment plan that best fits your financial needs.
